Best Time of Year to Wakesurf in South Florida

The short answer: year-round. The useful answer is a month-by-month read on water temps, wind and glassy mornings so you can pick the perfect day on Palm Beach County water.

Ask ten Palm Beach County boaters when the best time to wakesurf is and you'll get one honest answer — all of it. Unlike the lakes up north that ice over for half the year, Lake Osborne, Lake Ida, and the Intracoastal stay rideable 12 months a year. But “rideable” and “perfect” aren't the same thing, so here's the local's read on how each season actually feels behind the boat.

Winter (December–February): peak season, cool water

This is when South Florida shows off. Humidity drops, mornings are crisp, the light is gorgeous, and the water is usually glassy at dawn. Water temps dip into the upper 60s to low 70s, so we recommend a spring suit or a shorty wetsuit top for lessons — you'll last longer and smile more. It's also the busiest tourist stretch, so if you're flying in, book early. Visitors staying near the water love the lakeside Hilton Palm Beach PBI or, down in Delray, the walkable Seagate — both put you minutes from a morning session.

Spring (March–May): the sweet spot

If we had to circle a few months on the calendar, it'd be these. Water warms back into the high 70s, the wind lays down between fronts, and the crowds thin out after spring break. Long daylight hours mean you can catch a glassy dawn surf and still fit in a sandbar afternoon. Spring is prime time for first-timers because warm, forgiving water makes learning to pop up on a surf wave a whole lot less intimidating.

Summer (June–September): early birds win

Summer water is bathtub-warm — low to mid 80s — and the surf feels effortless. The trick is timing. South Florida's afternoon thunderstorms build like clockwork, so the play is a morning ride: on the water by 8 a.m., glass for hours, off before the 2 p.m. clouds stack up. Mornings are also the calmest wind window, which means cleaner wakes and easier deep-water starts. We watch the radar so you don't have to. It's also hurricane season, so we keep a close eye on the tropics and reschedule freely if a system rolls through — nobody surfs in a squall.

Fall (October–November): the quiet secret

Locals love the fall. Storm season winds down, water is still warm from summer, and the tourist rush hasn't arrived yet, so the lakes feel like they're yours. Sunsets get earlier and richer — ideal for a golden-hour cruise. Our sunset charter runs $449 and it's the single most-booked experience we offer this time of year for good reason.

Reading the daily conditions

Season sets the backdrop, but the day is won or lost on two things:

So when should YOU book?

For a bucket-list glassy session with cooler air, aim for winter or spring mornings. For warm-water learning and effortless surf, summer at sunrise is unbeatable. For empty water and unreal light, fall is the quiet MVP. Planning a trip around it? The Palm Beaches tourism site is a good hub for lodging, dining, and what else to do between rides.

Whenever you come, we'll match the boat, the wake, and the launch to the conditions that day. Browse our charter, lesson, and party packages to pick your window, or text us at (561) 475-8615 and we'll tell you straight which morning this week is looking glassiest. And if a great season on the water has you thinking about owning your own rig, our wake-boat valuation and service desk can help you figure out timing and value before you buy.

Danny Bivins — Owner & Captain

I own and captain a MasterCraft X30 out of Lantana and ride Lake Osborne, Lake Ida and the Intracoastal just about every week. This guide comes from actually owning, riding and chartering these boats here — not a content mill. Questions, or want to come ride? Text me at (561) 475-8615 or book a charter.

Frequently asked

Can you wakesurf year-round in South Florida?+

Yes. Lake Osborne, Lake Ida, and the Intracoastal stay rideable all 12 months. Winter water runs cooler (upper 60s to low 70s), while summer is bathtub-warm in the 80s.

What's the best month to wakesurf in Palm Beach County?+

Spring (March through May) is the sweet spot: warm water, lighter winds between fronts, thinner crowds, and long daylight. Fall is a close second for empty lakes and great light.

When is the water calmest for the cleanest wake?+

Early morning, almost every day. Wind is lightest before the afternoon sea breeze fills in, and protected lakes like Lake Osborne stay glassy longer than the open Intracoastal.

Is summer too stormy to ride?+

Not if you go early. South Florida's thunderstorms build in the afternoon, so a morning session on the water by 8 a.m. usually gives you hours of calm, warm water before the clouds arrive.
