What we build

Why gates sag — and how we prevent it

A gate leaf is a lever. All of its weight hangs off the hinge side, and the longer and heavier the leaf, the more force it puts on that post every time it swings. Three things prevent sag:

• An oversized hinge post, set deeper, in a bigger footing. A gate post is not a line post. Using the same post for both is the number one cause of gates that drag by the second season.
• A rigid frame. Diagonal bracing on wood gates, welded or bolted internal frames inside vinyl and aluminum leaves. A rectangle without a diagonal is a hinge, not a frame.
• Hardware rated for the actual weight, in a finish that survives coastal air. Undersized hinges will pull out and stainless or hot-dip galvanized is worth what it costs here.

Gate repair

We repair gates on fences we didn't build. Common calls: a gate that dragged a groove into the driveway, a hinge post leaning toward the opening, a latch that stopped catching, a pool gate that no longer self-closes, or a drive gate that racked out of square. Most are fixable in one visit — re-hanging, re-squaring, resetting the post, or replacing hardware. Automatic gates

If you're planning an operator, the gate has to be built for it from the start — heavier frame, heavier posts, and clearances the operator needs. Tell us at the estimate and we'll build it to accept one, whether that's now or later.
