There isn't one correct answer — there's a correct answer for your property, your budget, and how much maintenance you're willing to do. The short version:

• You want maximum privacy for the least money — wood. Board-on-board or stockade at six feet.
• You never want to think about it again — vinyl. Costs more up front, no painting, no rot, no rust.
• You're near the water, or it's a pool enclosure — aluminum. Won't corrode, won't block the view, and it's what most HOAs specify.
• You need to enclose a lot of ground economically — chain link. Black vinyl-coated if you'd rather not see it.
• You have a pool — you have a legal barrier requirement, not just a preference. Height, gaps, climbability, and gate hardware all have to comply.

The other half of the decision is wind exposure. A solid six-foot privacy panel on an open, west-facing lot takes a beating that the same fence tucked behind a hedge never sees. That changes post depth and footing size — and it's a big part of why we insist on looking at the property before we quote.
